Hi Ariadne!Yes, you're right! Both words have the same meaning! The thing is that "pavement" is a British word, meanwhile "sidewalk" is a American word!

"Sidewalk" specifically refers to the concrete path beside a road; "pavement" can refer to any hardened, non-dirt surface where people or vehicles travel, or even to something like a tennis court.
In other words, a sidewalk is pavement, but pavement does not have to be a sidewalk. (Canadian usage)
